Part of a 3-part ownership series
This guide covers gas. See also which electricity retailers are Australian owned and who owns your internet provider.
East coast (NEM states)
On the National Electricity Market states, gas mostly rides on the same corporate ownership as electricity, AGL, Origin, EnergyAustralia, Alinta and ENGIE all sell both fuels under one retail licence. Check a gas bill's retailer name against the electricity ownership guide, if it's AGL, Origin, EnergyAustralia, Alinta, ENGIE, Red Energy, Momentum or Dodo, the ownership status is identical.
Western Australia
WA's gas market runs separately from the east coast. Kleenheat (Wesfarmers, ASX-listed, Australian) is the major retailer for natural gas. Kleenheat's LPG distribution business was sold to Supagas in 2024, so LPG customers in WA are now served under the Supagas brand rather than Kleenheat. The gas distribution network itself, ATCO Gas Australia, is owned by ATCO Ltd, a Canadian company. So the retailer selling you gas in WA is Australian owned, but the pipes it travels through are foreign owned.
Our take
Gas ownership is the least interesting of the three utilities to research separately, because for most households it's a straight copy of the electricity answer. The exception is WA, where the network operator (not the retailer) is the foreign-owned piece, worth knowing if you're comparing "who profits from my bill" rather than "who do I call".
