Our recommendation

If you have NBN fixed line (FTTP, FTTN, HFC) available at your address, use it. It is cheaper, faster on the higher tiers, and more consistent than Starlink. Starlink is not a competitor to NBN fixed line; it is a competitor to NBN satellite and fixed wireless.

If your only NBN option is Sky Muster satellite, Starlink is almost certainly better. The speed difference (50-200 Mbps vs 12-25 Mbps), the latency difference (25-60 ms vs 600+ ms), and the unlimited data make Starlink dramatically more usable for modern internet tasks, particularly video calls, which are essentially unusable on Sky Muster due to the high latency.

If you are on NBN fixed wireless (speeds up to 75 Mbps), the decision is closer. Fixed wireless is cheaper and adequate for most household needs. Starlink offers potentially faster speeds but at nearly double the monthly cost. If fixed wireless is delivering adequate speeds for your household, stick with it. If you need faster upload speeds or more consistent performance, Starlink may justify the premium.

When Starlink makes sense

Remote and rural properties where the only NBN option is Sky Muster satellite. This covers much of regional Australia: large parts of western NSW, outback Queensland, remote NT (including Ghan, Alice Springs surrounds, and the Top End outside Darwin), the WA Pilbara and Kimberley, and remote SA. For these addresses, Starlink transforms internet from barely functional to genuinely usable.

Farms, stations, and rural businesses that need reliable video conferencing, cloud-based farm management software, or remote monitoring systems. Sky Muster's 600+ ms latency makes real-time applications impractical. Starlink's 25 to 60 ms latency supports these use cases.

Caravans and travelling households. Starlink offers a portable option (Starlink Roam) that works anywhere with a clear view of the sky, making it popular with grey nomads and remote workers travelling around Australia.

When NBN is better value

Any address with NBN fixed line (FTTP, FTTN, HFC). NBN 50 from a competitive ISP costs $65 to $80 per month with consistent speeds, unlimited data, and no $599 equipment cost. Starlink at $139 per month with a $599 dish is significantly more expensive for comparable or lower speeds.

Addresses with NBN fixed wireless. At $65 to $80 per month with speeds up to 75 Mbps and unlimited data, fixed wireless is adequate for most households at a much lower cost than Starlink.

Price-sensitive households. If monthly cost is the primary factor, even Sky Muster at $45 to $70 per month is cheaper than Starlink. For light internet use (email, basic browsing, no video calls), Sky Muster is functional enough.

Starlink practicalities

Installation: Self-install. The dish needs a clear view of the northern sky (in Australia). Trees, buildings, and hills can block the signal and cause dropouts. Most properties mount the dish on the roof or a pole.

Weather: Heavy rain can temporarily reduce speeds or cause brief outages. Snow and ice can accumulate on the dish, though the built-in heater helps in cold regions. In tropical areas (Far North QLD, Top End), wet season storms can cause intermittent issues.

Speed variability: Starlink speeds vary more than fixed-line NBN. You might see 200 Mbps one test and 50 Mbps the next, depending on satellite position, congestion, and weather. Average speeds have declined slightly as the user base has grown, though they remain well above Sky Muster.

No lock-in: Starlink is month-to-month with no contract. You can cancel at any time and keep the hardware to restart later.
