Our take on ActewAGL
ActewAGL is the default electricity and gas retailer for most Canberra households, and the ACT simply has fewer competing retailers than NSW or Victoria, so it is worth checking who else actually services your address before assuming there is real choice to shop around. On its own numbers, moving off the regulated Standing Offer and onto a discounted plan like Smart Saver can save a meaningful amount, particularly if your usage suits time-of-use pricing.
Customer reviews are not strong: ProductReview has it at 1.5 out of 5 from a reasonably large sample, though Trustpilot is more favourable. As with most incumbent retailers in a market with limited competition, low reviews often reflect billing and service friction more than the plans themselves. If ActewAGL is your only realistic option in the ACT, the main lever available to you is picking the right plan rather than the retailer.
