Test your speed
For the most accurate result, connect your computer to your router with an ethernet cable and close other applications before testing. Run the test two to three times and take the average.

Understanding your speed test results
| Download speed | What it supports | Likely NBN tier |
|---|---|---|
| Under 12 Mbps | Basic browsing, email. Struggles with video. | NBN 12 or degraded connection |
| 12-25 Mbps | HD streaming (1 device), basic video calls | NBN 25 |
| 25-50 Mbps | 4K streaming, video calls, gaming | NBN 50 |
| 50-100 Mbps | Multiple 4K streams, heavy simultaneous use | NBN 100 |
| 100+ Mbps | Everything, including large file transfers | NBN 250 or 1000 |
If your speed is below what you pay for
Test on a wired ethernet connection first to rule out wifi as the issue. If wired speed is still below your paid tier, the cause is likely your NBN technology type (FTTN copper distance) or your ISP's peak-hour congestion.
Check the ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia report to see how your ISP performs during peak hours. If your ISP consistently underdelivers, switching to a higher-rated provider (Superloop, Aussie Broadband, Telstra) may resolve the issue without changing your speed tier.
If your address is on FTTN and the copper run to the node is long, the free FTTP upgrade (Fibre Connect) may be available. This is the most impactful fix for slow FTTN connections.
