Tasmanian residential prices are regulated and Aurora Energy supplies almost all households, so there is effectively no retail market to switch within. Reducing usage, or adding solar, is where the saving comes from here.

Tasmania has among the lowest usage rates in Australia thanks to its hydro generation base, though households use more electricity than the mainland average because of colder winters and electric heating.

Typical bills use average single-rate residential rates for 2026–27 (effective 1 July 2026), from the AER Default Market Offer and ESC Victorian Default Offer determinations, reviewed 20 July 2026. Cheapest plan figures come from live retailer plan data published under the Consumer Data Right, refreshed weekly. Your bill depends on your retailer, tariff type, meter and usage pattern. Tasmania has a regulated electricity market with limited retail competition. Aurora Energy is the primary retailer, with TasNetworks operating the distribution network. Regulated tariffs are set by the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator (OTTER).

Tasmania generates most of its electricity from hydropower, giving it one of the lowest carbon intensity grids in the country. Wholesale prices are linked to the NEM via the Basslink interconnector, which means Tasmanian prices are influenced by conditions on the mainland, particularly Victoria.

Our take on electricity in Tasmania

Tasmania's electricity market has very limited competition, so the main opportunity for savings is tariff optimisation rather than retailer switching. Aurora Energy offers flat rate (tariff 31), time-of-use (tariff 93), and heating and hot water tariffs (tariff 41, 42) that can significantly reduce costs for households with off-peak hot water or storage heating.

1st Energy is one of the few alternative retailers operating in Tasmania. If you want to compare beyond Aurora, they are worth checking.

Tasmania's hydro-dominated grid means electricity is relatively clean, which may matter if you are considering going all-electric (replacing gas appliances). The environmental case for electrification is strong in TAS because the grid is already low-carbon.
