Mains natural gas availability in Tasmania is very limited. Tas Gas operates a small reticulated gas network in parts of Hobart and Launceston, but the majority of Tasmanian homes do not have access to mains gas. Most households use electricity (from Tasmania's predominantly hydroelectric grid) or bottled LPG for cooking and hot water.

For most Tasmanian households, gas is not a relevant comparison. Tasmania's hydroelectric grid provides some of the cleanest and most reliable electricity in Australia. If you are on bottled LPG for cooking, switching to an induction cooktop eliminates the LPG cost entirely. Heat pump hot water systems are increasingly popular in Tasmania and are typically cheaper to run than gas or electric resistance systems.
