Gas in the Northern Territory
Mains natural gas is not available for residential customers in the Northern Territory. While the NT has significant natural gas resources (including the onshore Beetaloo Basin and offshore fields), these supply industrial and export markets, not residential reticulated networks.
NT households that use gas rely on bottled LPG, which is more expensive per unit of energy than mains gas and requires regular delivery. Most NT homes use electricity for cooking, hot water, and cooling (cooling being the dominant energy cost in the tropical Top End).
Our take on gas in the NT
There is no mains gas comparison to be made in the NT. If you are on bottled LPG, consider switching to electric appliances (induction cooktop, heat pump hot water) to eliminate the LPG cost. The NT's high solar irradiance makes solar panels particularly effective, and pairing solar with electric appliances reduces both your electricity bill and your LPG costs.
