Internet in Queensland
NBN technology available in QLD includes FTTP, FTTN, HFC, fixed wireless, and satellite. South East Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast) has good FTTP and HFC coverage. Regional centres (Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg) have FTTP and FTTN in town with fixed wireless on the outskirts. Remote QLD relies on fixed wireless and satellite.
ISPs available in QLD
Major internet service providers operating in QLD include Aussie Broadband, Telstra, TPG, Superloop, Tangerine, and others.
All NBN retailers sell access to the same physical network, so the speed your connection can deliver is determined by your NBN technology type, not your ISP. The differences between ISPs are pricing, peak-hour congestion management, and customer support quality. The ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia report is the best independent source for comparing actual peak-hour speeds across providers.
Our take on internet in QLD
Queensland has the largest geographic spread of any state, which means NBN technology varies enormously by location. In SEQ, you have the same ISP competition and technology as Sydney or Melbourne. In regional centres, coverage is good but speeds may be limited on FTTN. For remote properties, Starlink has become a genuine game-changer: faster and lower latency than Sky Muster, though at a higher monthly cost ($139/month vs $45 to $70 for Sky Muster plans).

Your NBN technology type determines the maximum speed available at your address. You can check your technology at the NBN Co address checker. For a detailed explanation of what each technology type means for your speeds, see our NBN speed tiers guide.
The free FTTP upgrade
If your address is on FTTN (fibre to the node) or FTTC (fibre to the curb), you may be eligible for a free upgrade to full FTTP (fibre to the premises) under NBN Co's Fibre Connect programme. This upgrade dramatically improves available speeds and reliability. Check with your ISP or NBN Co for eligibility in QLD.
