Internet in Northern Territory
NBN technology available in NT includes FTTN, fixed wireless, and satellite. Darwin and Alice Springs have FTTN and some FTTP in newer areas. Regional and remote NT relies on fixed wireless and Sky Muster satellite. Mobile coverage is limited outside urban centres.
ISPs available in NT
Major internet service providers operating in NT include Aussie Broadband, Telstra, TPG, and a smaller range of providers than southern states.
All NBN retailers sell access to the same physical network, so the speed your connection can deliver is determined by your NBN technology type, not your ISP. The differences between ISPs are pricing, peak-hour congestion management, and customer support quality. The ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia report is the best independent source for comparing actual peak-hour speeds across providers.
Our take on internet in NT
Internet in the NT is a tale of two markets. Darwin and Alice Springs have functional NBN with FTTN and fixed wireless, and a reasonable range of ISPs to choose from. Everywhere else, options are limited to Sky Muster satellite or Starlink. For remote NT communities and stations, Starlink has been transformative: usable video calls, streaming, and cloud services that were not possible on Sky Muster. The $139/month cost is justified for most remote properties given the dramatic improvement in capability.

Your NBN technology type determines the maximum speed available at your address. You can check your technology at the NBN Co address checker. For a detailed explanation of what each technology type means for your speeds, see our NBN speed tiers guide.
The free FTTP upgrade
If your address is on FTTN (fibre to the node) or FTTC (fibre to the curb), you may be eligible for a free upgrade to full FTTP (fibre to the premises) under NBN Co's Fibre Connect programme. This upgrade dramatically improves available speeds and reliability. Check with your ISP or NBN Co for eligibility in NT.
