Gas in the ACT
Natural gas is available across most of Canberra via the Evoenergy distribution network. ActewAGL (EnergyAustralia) is the primary gas retailer, with some competition from other providers. The ACT Government has been actively encouraging electrification, with a ban on new gas connections in some development areas and rebates for households switching from gas to electric appliances.
Our take on gas in the ACT
The ACT Government's policy direction is clearly towards electrification. New suburbs are being built without gas infrastructure, and rebates are available for switching existing gas appliances to electric. If you are planning renovations or replacing old gas appliances, going all-electric aligns with both the policy direction and the economics, particularly given Canberra's cold winters make heat pump efficiency a strong value proposition.
