Natural gas is available in most of the Sydney metropolitan area and parts of regional NSW including the Hunter Valley, Central Coast, Illawarra, and some inland centres. However, many newer suburbs and developments do not have gas connections, and the trend in new housing is increasingly towards all-electric.

Gas in NSW is less dominant than in Victoria. Many households use gas only for cooking and hot water, with electric heating via reverse cycle. If gas is a small part of your energy spend, make sure you are not paying a high daily supply charge for minimal usage. Some households pay more in supply charges than usage charges, which means disconnecting gas entirely and switching to an induction cooktop and heat pump hot water could save money.
If you use gas heating, comparing plans is worthwhile. The gap between the default offer and competitive market offers is typically $80 to $200 per year for gas, which is less dramatic than electricity but still meaningful.
